Wrench Solutions Co-founder & CTO Aju PeterWrench Solutions has spent over 25 years helping engineering and construction firms digitize project management. How has the industry’s approach to digital transformation evolved, and what role has Wrench played in driving this change?

The engineering and construction industry began showing clear signs of digital transformation in the second decade of this century, as mobile and cloud computing matured into viable business solutions. The pace accelerated dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, when remote working, digital communication and distributed collaboration became essential.

Wrench, with more than two and a half decades of experience in engineering content and project management, was well positioned for this shift through our established EDM and PMIS product suite. We had already earned the trust of customers who had used our solutions for many years; the key challenge was scaling these capabilities.

The rapid evolution of cloud platforms helped address that challenge by making enterprise applications more affordable and easier to deploy without extensive physical IT infrastructure. Our collaborative document review capabilities enabled project teams to review engineering documents remotely, while our project communication and reporting tools helped connect management and site teams effectively. This enabled many project sites to continue operating with minimal disruption.

You led the transformation of Wrench’s legacy desktop platform into a cloud-first SaaS-based PMIS solution. What were the biggest technological and business challenges during this transition, and what key lessons did you learn?

Wrench adopted cloud technology as soon as commercially viable platforms emerged. We were among the early organisations to partner with Microsoft to transition our client-server product to the cloud. The journey was challenging, with the technology itself presenting the biggest obstacle.

Our existing application relied heavily on tightly coupled network sockets, while the emerging cloud architecture was based on stateless HTTP communication. Microsoft helped us address this through an architectural model called “Smart Client,” allowing us to retain a Windows-based client while moving the server layer to web services deployed on the cloud.

This enabled us to transition in two phases. First, we replaced our TCP/IP socket-based server with HTTP web services while retaining the existing client application. We then moved toward a browser-based, completely cloud-native client, overcoming the challenges of deploying applications on individual user devices.

This phased approach allowed us to bring cloud capabilities to customers faster and capture the opportunities created by the rapid acceleration of digital transformation.

AI is rapidly reshaping enterprise software. How is Wrench integrating AI into its project management platform, and what practical benefits can engineering and construction organizations expect from these capabilities? 

AI is rapidly reshaping the industry, while the technology itself continues to evolve at an equally rapid pace. At Wrench, we have clearly defined our AI product roadmap and are developing AI capabilities as a complementary product line alongside our core platform. This allows AI capabilities to evolve independently while remaining deeply integrated with our main product suite.

As an EDMS and PMIS platform, Wrench manages a vast amount of engineering and project information that can be orchestrated by AI to generate deeper project-management insights. We are also building local graph repositories for individual customers, giving them greater confidence that their proprietary project data remains protected and is not used to train public large language models.

One of the key capabilities we are developing is intelligent “what-if” analysis, allowing project teams to assess potential scenarios using their own project information. Our integrated AI capabilities can therefore provide greater predictability, transparency and visibility into project health and emerging trends, helping organisations make better-informed decisions.

As both CTO and CISO, how do you balance innovation with cybersecurity, especially when delivering cloud-based solutions for large global infrastructure and engineering projects?

Security comes first. Innovation provides a competitive advantage, but a failure in security can have catastrophic consequences. This is particularly important today, as regulatory and legal frameworks across the world increasingly establish stringent standards for data protection and privacy.

For cloud-based software, controlling vulnerabilities and protecting both customer data and applications must therefore remain a fundamental priority. Establishing secure-by-design principles and aligning them with recognised security and information-protection standards, such as ISMS and SOC, provides a strong foundation.

Technology continues to evolve rapidly, and we embrace innovation with every significant advancement. However, security cannot be treated as something added at the end of the development process. We build security consciousness into every stage of our software development lifecycle, from design through development and delivery.

For us, innovation and cybersecurity are not competing priorities. Our objective is to ensure that innovation is built on a secure foundation, making the delivery of secure software a natural part of how we operate.

Engineering and construction projects often involve multiple stakeholders across different geographies. How does Wrench’s SmartProject platform improve collaboration, transparency, and project delivery while keeping costs under control?

Every successful collaboration is ultimately an orchestrated business process. When processes are clearly defined and expectations at each stage are established, collaboration becomes significantly easier to manage.

At Wrench, one of the first capabilities we developed was a dynamic workflow engine designed to be both highly flexible and robust. Complex business processes can be represented as auditable workflows, with responsibilities assigned to specific individuals at each stage. This helps ensure that established processes are followed consistently.

Each workflow stage can also have defined rules governing completion, notifications and prerequisites. As the process progresses, the workflow captures every event and creates an auditable work log. This provides stakeholders with visibility into what has happened, who has acted, and where a process currently stands.

The result is a collaborative environment that is transparent, traceable and auditable. By systematically managing processes rather than relying on fragmented communication, organisations can improve coordination across stakeholders and geographies while reducing the risk of delays, rework and avoidable project costs.

With customers across more than 45 countries and operations spanning multiple regions, what technology trends are you seeing globally, and how are they influencing Wrench’s product roadmap?

Artificial intelligence is clearly at the top of the technology research agenda today, and we are closely following its evolution. However, at Wrench, we look at AI from a very practical perspective, particularly because we operate in the engineering projects domain, where intellectual property and the protection of project data are extremely important.

Our focus is therefore on building AI-driven productivity enhancements that are secure, practical and affordable, rather than adopting technology simply because it is a trend. We believe AI must deliver tangible value while respecting the confidentiality and ownership of customers’ engineering and project information.

At the same time, we continue to develop our project-management capabilities in line with global frameworks and the requirements of emerging sectors, including renewable energy and other new areas of engineering and infrastructure.

The technology landscape will continue to evolve rapidly, but our product roadmap remains grounded in a simple principle: use emerging technology to solve real project challenges while maintaining security, practicality and business value.

Looking ahead, what are your priorities for Wrench Solutions over the next few years, and how do you see emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and intelligent automation transforming the future of engineering and construction project management?

From a technology perspective, our priority is to make Wrench Solutions more intelligent, secure, scalable and customer-centric. We will continue investing in AI, cloud computing and intelligent automation to move project management from reactive monitoring to predictive and proactive decision-making. AI will increasingly help engineering and construction teams identify risks, analyse project data, evaluate what-if scenarios and recommend corrective actions before issues become delays. Cloud-native architecture will enable greater collaboration, scalability and accessibility across global projects, while intelligent automation will reduce repetitive work and improve productivity. Ultimately, our goal is to combine these technologies to deliver secure, practical and affordable digital solutions that help organisations execute complex projects with greater predictability, efficiency and control.
