Google’s ‘Build with AI: Code for Communities’ Connects Developers with Members of Parliament to Tackle Grassroots Challenges

Google concluded the Parliamentary Showcase for Build with AI: Code for Communities, a nationwide initiative bridging tech innovation and local governance. Organized in collaboration with The Dialogue, the finale on July 22 in New Delhi featured 12 winning developer teams presenting live AI applications directly to Members of Parliament (MPs). As the program transitions to its next phase, selected winning solutions will be piloted in real-world constituencies.

The program mobilized over 7,000 developers across 18+ Indian cities, generating over 1,000 open-source projects built on Google’s AI stack, including Gemini and Gemma. Problem statements were sourced directly from sitting MPs across four key tracks:

  • Civic & Governance: Multilingual AI platforms aggregating citizen feedback to optimize local development budgets.
  • Environment: Real-time pollution tracking fusing satellite, sensor, and citizen data to spot local hotspots.
  • Public Health: AI command centers for rural health clinics predicting medicine stock-outs and tracking resources.
  • Agriculture: Indic-language voice and SMS tools providing smallholder farmers with satellite-backed crop advice.

Quote from Google India Spokesperson

“AI offers a generational opportunity to leapfrog old problems and create new solutions for humanity’s biggest challenges. Through initiatives like ‘Code for Communities,’ India’s world-class developers and thriving digital infrastructure are setting a global standard. Whether it’s managing smart health centers, predicting crop yields, or tracking local pollution, India is showing the world what AI looks like at population scale. Because the benefits of AI won’t automatically reach everyone, we are deeply committed to building a responsible foundation and providing the training our youth and developers need so that the benefits of AI serve the many, not just the few.”

Quote from MPs

The finale featured 12 winning developer teams pitching their solutions directly to MPs. Recognizing the importance of youth innovation and tech-driven governance, participating leaders shared their perspectives on the initiative:

  • Bansuri Swaraj, Hon’ble MP, Lok Sabha: “The true promise of AI lies not in how much it can compute, but in how deeply it can serve human life. This hackathon by Google invites young minds to see the city not as a maze of problems, but as a living community waiting for cleaner air, healthier neighbourhoods, smarter systems, and more responsive public service. I urge every participant to build with imagination and conscience, so that AI becomes not merely an instrument of efficiency, but a force for human progress.”
  • Sujeet Kumar, Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha: “Effective governance thrives when paired with modern innovation. Build with AI: Code for Communities by Google Cloud beautifully bridges the gap between leadership and the nation’s brightest tech minds.”
  • Gaurav Gogoi, Hon’ble MP, Lok Sabha: “India’s young innovators have immense potential to solve real-world challenges when given the right tools and opportunities. This hackathon provided a unique platform for developers to use AI to tackle important public challenges. I hope it sparks ideas that can be translated into real-world solutions for challenges faced by citizens every day.”
  • Mathukumilli Bharat, Hon’ble MP, Lok Sabha: “We need students and citizens who are willing to put their skills to work on real issues. Platforms like this Code for Communities hackathon by Google are a chance for them to learn, refine their skills, and put them to use.”
  • Sasmit Patra, Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha: “By bringing together bright engineering minds, Google’s hackathon helps bridge the gap between technology and local governance.”
  • Lavu Krishna, Hon’ble MP, Lok Sabha, “I commend Google for launching the Code for Communities initiative and harnessing the power of technology to solve real world challenges.”
  • Niranjan Reddy, Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha: “By bringing together local AI developers and Members of Parliament, this initiative enables technology to be a force multiplier for public good”.

From Code to Community Impact

Beyond a traditional hackathon, “Build with AI: Code for Communities” serves as an incubator for real-world change. The winning solutions will receive support for pilot deployments in actual constituencies, setting a repeatable blueprint for how the Google tech stack can act as a force multiplier for welfare and societal development.
